Rockies spring training recap: Michael Toglia hits fourth homer of Cactus League

Rockies 11, A’s 9
Saturday at Salt River Fields

On the mound: Kyle Freeland, looking to regain his 2018 form, continued his solid spring. The lefty pitched five innings (71 pitches, 49 strikes) and gave up two runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Freeland’s 3.21 ERA includes 14 strikeouts vs. just one walk. He’s served up just one homer. … Right-hander Tyler Kinley continues to show why he’s likely to begin the season as the Rockies’ closer. Kinley pitched a clean sixth inning and has yet to allow a run. … Right-hander Justin Lawrence, who came into camp hoping to win the closer’s job, has an 11.37 ERA after giving up six runs (five earned) in just one-third of an inning. Several Oakland’s hits were seeing-eye singles, but Lawrence has endured a couple of tough outings this spring.

At the plate: Backup first baseman and corner outfielder Michael Toglia, returning after missing time because of a stiff neck, hit his fourth home run of the Cactus League. He’s hitting .353 with a 1.230 OPS. … Starting first baseman Kris Bryant hit his third homer, a two-run blast in the first inning. Bryant is hitting .200.

Prospect watch: Non-roster invitee Aaron Schunk played third base and went hitless in two at-bats. He’s hitting .286 with a .690 OPS this spring.

Up Next: Rockies at Giants, 2:05 p.m. (MDT) Sunday.

Rockies probable pitchers: RHP Cal Quantril, LHP Evan Justice, RHP John Curtiss, RHP Anthony Molina, RHP Jake Bird.
