Two road workers injured in Interstate 70 crash near Wheat Ridge

Two roadside workers were seriously injured in a crash on eastbound Interstate 70 near Ward Road on Tuesday morning, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

Officers responded to the crash at 11:20 a.m. and shut down several lanes of I-70, the department posted on X.

A truck driver hauling a trailer in the left lane was driving behind a larger truck that was blocking his view of a safety vehicle parked up that serves as a buffer for workers on the road, said Wheat Ridge police spokesperson Alex Rose.

After the larger truck changed lanes, the driver struck the buffer vehicle, then went forward and struck a second truck and two contract roadside workers.

The two workers were taken to a hospital with serious bodily injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, Rose said. The workers were setting up road signs in the area.

The driver stayed at the scene and was cited with careless driving. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors and investigators are looking into speed as a factor in the crash, Rose said.
