Commerce City officers shoot knife-wielding man who planned to kill his family, police say

Commerce City police officers shot and injured a man Thursday who they said was armed with a knife and threatening to kill his family.

Just after 8 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 7000 block of Garden Lane after a man, 22, called 911 to report he was armed with a knife and planning to kill his family, according to a news release from the Commerce City Police Department.

When officers arrived at the scene, they attempted to de-escalate the situation and repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop the knife, the news release stated. When the man refused, officers fired their weapons, police said.

Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital, according to the news release. The extent of his injuries was unknown Friday morning and his identity has not been released.

The Critical Incident Response Team for the 17th Judicial District is investigating the incident; the involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
