Teen arrested in armed carjacking and fatal crash in Aurora

Aurora police have arrested a 17-year-old suspect in an armed carjacking that led to a fatal crash that killed a 24-year-old man, police department officials announced Tuesday.

The man was killed in the crash at Dayton Street and 19th Avenue Sunday night after the suspect fled police in a stolen vehicle and police chased it, according to the Aurora Police Department’s postings on the social media platform X.

The teenager, from Aurora, has been arrested on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and vehicular eluding causing death, APD spokesman Joe Moylan said in a press release. He was taken into custody after the crash and evaluated at a local hospital, where he received treatment and was released. He’s now being held at a juvenile detention facility in Adams County.

The man, from Aurora, was the only occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene from injuries he sustained in the crash, Moylan said.

On Sunday around 7 p.m., officers responded to an Aurora 911 report of an armed carjacking near 23rd Avenue and Dallas Street. The carjacking victim helped officers identify the stolen vehicle, police said.

An officer saw the stolen vehicle speeding near the intersection of Dallas Street and East 25th Avenue and activated police lights and sirens. “But the suspect did not stop. Given the violent nature of the offense, a pursuit was authorized,” Moylan said.

Two other officers joined the chase over about four blocks until the suspect hit a speed bump in the 1900 block of Dayton Street, lost control, and hit several parked vehicles and the one occupied vehicle, he said.

Aurora traffic investigators went to the scene Sunday night, closing 19th Avenue around the intersection with Dayton, and Dayton between Montview and 17th Avenue, while they looked into what happened. A 17th Judicial District team, Aurora homicide, and gang and robbery investigators also went to the scene, police said.

The judicial district team is conducting a parallel investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash.
