Wildfire burning outside of Norwood in San Miguel County prompts pre-evacuation notice

A wildfire burning outside of Norwood in San Miguel County has prompted a pre-evacuation order, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Naturita fire has burned about ten acres and is 0% contained, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office said at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Pre-evacuations notices are posted for residents along Thunder Road, including La Mesa Vista and Catspaw, the sheriff’s office said. Thunder Road is closed to outside traffic for safety concerns. The fire was sparked by a lightning strike and smoke is visible from Norwood.

Sheriff’s deputies, the Norwood Fire Protection District, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service personnel are working on the fire. On Thursday a helicopter was used to make water drops and additional fire fighting ground crews are in route from Grand Junction.
