Suspect in Westminster homicide who prompted manhunt surrenders in Pueblo

The 22-year-old accused of fatally shooting a man in the 9800 block of Westcliff Parkway on Sunday morning turned himself in at the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office later that night, according to the Westminster police.

The search for the suspect led to an hours-long shelter-in-place order in an Arvada neighborhood.

Gilberth Alexis Gomez Arias is suspected of first-degree murder and felony menacing in the Westminster shooting.

Westminster police responded to a reported shooting in the 9800 block of Westcliff Parkway around 9:50 a.m. Sunday when a caller told dispatchers two men were fighting, and one had shot the other.

The shooting victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Westminster Police Department said in a Sunday night news release. The man’s identity will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Gomez Arias and the victim knew each other, according to Westminster police.

Police said Gomez Arias fled the scene in a vehicle, which later was found near 64th Avenue and Estes Street in Arvada.

Arvada and Westminster police asked residents to shelter in place on Sunday afternoon as they searched for Gomez Arias and executed a search warrant at an apartment on 62nd Avenue between Estes and Dover streets. The shelter-in-place was lifted at 7:45 p.m.

Gomez Arias turned himself in at the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office at around 11 p.m. Sunday, according to Westminster police.
