A 25-year-old man is dead after falling and being pulled underwater Sunday at West Creek Falls in Rocky Mountain National Park, according to a spokesperson with Rocky Mountain National Park.
The body of the Rhode Island man, whose name will be released once his family is notified, was pulled from the falls on the east side of the park Sunday night.
The victim’s body was flown by helicopter out of the park and transferred to the Larimer County Coroner who will determine the cause of death, a national park news release said.
Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Estes Park Health, Estes Park Police and Estes Valley Crisis Advocates all assisted the national park with the situation.
“Mountain rivers, streams, and waterfalls are running very cold and very fast this time of year,” a park news release stated about the death. “The depth and current of all waterways can be deceivingly deep and swift. Park visitors are reminded to keep back from the banks of streams, rivers and waterfalls. Rocks and vegetation near water sources are often very slippery. Powerful currents can quickly pull a person underwater.”
In the news release, a national park spokesperson reminded people to provide proper supervision of children while around water.
