Valor Christian’s Delaney Russell on Monday was named the Colorado Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year.
The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter helped lead the Eagles to their second straight Class 5A championship this past season to cap off a perfect 29-0 campaign. During the 2023 season, she totaled 383 kills, an average of 4.4 per set, and had a .395 hitting percentage.
“At the state tournament, Delaney Russell was outstanding on the biggest stage against the best competition,” Fossil Ridge head coach Natalie Burton said in a news release. “She continued to take on the biggest role offensively, along with passing and defense, and was exceptional. Really unstoppable. Like many coaches who played against her, she was our main focus to stop or slow down to have a chance to beat Valor. None of us could.”
Russell, who carries a 4.17 grade-point average, signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at the University of Montana next fall. She is the first Valor Christian player to receive the award.
