Denver man sentenced to life in prison in fatal car wash shooting

A 33-year-old Denver man was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in the shooting death of 52-year-old David Trujillo at a Sinclair gas station car wash in March 2023.

Uriel Rios-Avila was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and assault by a Denver jury on Monday, according to court records. He was acquitted of one count of assault.

Rios-Avila was arrested March 19, 2023 after he fatally shot Trujillo at a Sinclair gas station car wash at 620 Santa Fe Drive.

Investigators found Rios-Avila began planning to shoot Trujillo after finding out Rose-Avila’s girlfriend was cheating on him with Trujillo. Trujillo was also in a relationship with Rios-Avila’s ex-girlfriend.

Rios-Avila fled from police through a homeless encampment, where he changed clothes twice and cut his hair to alter his appearance, according to an arrest affidavit. Police found him inside a hole under train tracks when they arrested him.
