18-year-old rescued after falling 30 feet into abandoned missile silo near Deer Trail

Officials rescued an 18-year-old man who fell 30 feet into an abandoned missile silo near Deer Trail on Sunday morning, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The man fell into the silo, which is a concrete cylinder sunk into the ground, around 3:30 a.m. Sunday near 82000 East County Road 22 in Deer Trail, according to the sheriff. Two of the man’s friends, an 18-year-old male and a juvenile male, followed him into the silo through a broken gate after he fell and five juveniles, two boys and three girls, waited above ground, officials say.

Around 6 a.m., the two friends who were in the silo were rescued. Around 6:30 a.m., officials made contact with the injured man. He was rescued from the silo at 8:30 a.m. and airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to a Sunday news release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff.

The 18-year-old male who followed the victim inside the silo received a summons for third-degree criminal trespass, the release states. The juveniles, who all attend high schools in the Cherry Creek School District, were released to their parents with possible trespassing charges pending. Possible trespassing charges are also pending for the injured victim, who was released, according to officials.
