A student at George Washington High School in Denver injured a dean Tuesday after that student was involved in an off-campus fight with another student.
The incident Tuesday first involved two George Washington students off-campus, and Denver Police Department school resource officers responded to break that incident up and return the students to school, Denver Public Schools spokesperson Scott Pribble said in an emailed statement.
Soon after the students returned to school, “the situation became heated again” in the school building this time, Pribble said.
Officers escorted one of the students, a 17-year-old boy, into the school, and as soon as he entered the school, he ran from officers, a Denver police spokesperson who did not provide their name wrote in an email.
George Washington’s dean of culture attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation, Pribble said.
The student then assaulted the dean, the police spokesperson said. Officers placed the student into custody after a “brief struggle.”
The dean received medical attention and is back at work, Pribble said.
The student is being held for investigation of second-degree assault, the police spokesperson said.
Pribble said the school district cannot share specific disciplinary action the student may face there, but they “will follow the DPS discipline policy to the fullest extent possible.”
Because the arrestee is a juvenile, the arrest affidavit is not available for release, the police spokesperson said.
