Aurora police on Wednesday arrested a second teenage boy in connection to a deadly September shooting at a southeast Aurora shopping center.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested on felony charges of second-degree murder and aggravated robbery in the Sept. 30 death of 15-year-old Raphael Velin at the Southlands mall, 6100 block of South Main Street, the Aurora Police Department announced Thursday in a news release.
A 16-year-old boy in October turned himself in to police, who booked him into the Aurora jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated robbery and failing to report an accident to police.
Neither boy is being identified due to their age, police said.
Investigators are still trying to identify and locate additional suspects and witnesses to the shooting, according to the department.
Chief Art Acevedo said just before the first arrest investigators have five suspects in the killing, all juveniles or young adults. The suspects and Velin met at the mall “to conduct some business” that they should not be involved in, Acevedo said.
A large group of teenagers were gathered in the area to celebrate homecoming, including students from both Smoky Hill and Grandview high schools, said Ian Liu, an employee at Mt. Fuji Sushi & Hibachi at the mall.
