Denver’s Soiled Dove cancels all shows after owner’s lawsuit

Lowry’s Soiled Dove music venue has canceled all shows on its calendar following court proceedings between owner Frank Schultz and his mother Terry Papay.

“At this time, it is imperative to inform you that The Soiled Dove Underground is going through a major restructuring phase,” Schultz wrote to Soiled Dove’s mailing list. “Due to this re-organization it is necessary to make significant changes to our current and future line-up of shows.”

Those changes amount to wiping the venue at 7401 E. 1st Ave.’s entire calendar, which had been filled through May of this year. Schultz in March 2023 was sued by Papay, who accused him of draining hundreds of thousands of dollars from company bank accounts, according to Business Den.

That included keeping her out of real estate deals and not repaying $3.7 million in promissory notes, according to the suit. The very next month, Schultz countersued Papay.

The initial suit has been settled, Schultz said Wednesday.

“For the next several months specifically February through July 2024 we will assume an official ‘hold’ status until further notice. Unfortunately, this will mean that all of our shows on our website through May 2024 will need to be canceled,” Schultz wrote this week.

Schultz followed that passage with an all-caps notice about ticket refunds, promising them via the Eventbrite.com platform or, if purchased in-person with cash, via refunds at the Tavern-Lowry restaurant. Purchasers must bring their tickets to get the refund, he said.

Schultz in January said from the witness stand that Tavern restaurants in Littleton and Lowry “are losing a lot of money,” as Business Den’s Justin Wingerter reported. Former Tavern locations in Uptown, the Denver Tech Center, Washington Park, downtown Denver and Platt Park have all closed.

“We are communicating directly with all our artists, agencies and promoters regarding the current shows being advertised on our website www.soileddove.com and our ticketing platform,” Schultz wrote. “Additionally, through no fault of her own, our Talent Buyer Michelle Bishop will not be able to schedule any future shows until litigation is complete around the company restructure.”

The Soiled Dove Underground at Lowry has been open since 1997.
