A man suspected of stealing a car in Silverthorne was killed in a shooting with police Monday night, according to town officials.

Dillon and Silverthorne police officers responded to reports of a stolen car in progress at the Summit Place Shopping Center near Interstate 70 and Colorado 6 just before 8 p.m. Monday, town officials said in a news release.

A Silverthorne officer chased the suspect, who was armed, and shot the man during the incident, town spokesperson Kristina Nayden said in an email.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, and neither the officer nor the man who was killed have been identified. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.

I-70 eastbound was closed for several hours Monday night and Colo. 9 was closed until 4 a.m. due to the shooting, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation and town officials.
