Shots were fired in Douglas County east of the Park Meadows Mall on Wednesday afternoon in an exchange of gunfire between a pedestrian and someone in a passing vehicle. Early indications are that no one was hit by the gunfire, said Sheriff Darren Weekly.
A large police presence responded to the area of Jamaica Street and South Valley Highway, which is just east of Interstate 25 and north of E-470, according to the sheriff’s office. A code red “shelter in place” order was posted for the surrounding area, including an apartment complex. The order was cleared late in the afternoon.
Deputies on scene found evidence of shots fired, said Cocha Heyden, a sheriff’s spokesperson. Responders did not find a victim, but the sheriff’s office released a photo of a person of interest in the incident.
Weekly, in a news conference at the scene, said the pedestrian, armed with a rifle, ran north and got into the passenger side of a white Chevrolet Tahoe which sped off. The suspect vehicle, from which shots were fired from a handgun, is described as a dark-colored Nissan sedan.
The sheriff’s office notified area hospitals to be on the watch for anyone who come in and is suffering from a gunshot wound.
“Obviously, it’s very concerning,” Weekly said of the broad daylight shootout in an extremely busy area.
Several roads in the area were shut down by the incident, including a section of Inverness Parkway. An investigation is ongoing.
