Juvenile investigated for allegedly firing a shot at a Denver police officer

A juvenile who allegedly fired a shot at a Denver police officer is being held for investigation of attempted first-degree murder.

The incident happened about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday when officers responded to the 3000 block of Gilpin Street on a report of shots fired and a ShotSpotter alert, police said in a news release.

When officers arrived, they attempted to contact three people, including a juvenile male who disregarded police commands and attempted to walk away, the release said. An officer struggled with the juvenile, who allegedly pulled a handgun and fired one close-range shot at the officer. The officer was not hit by the shot, and the juvenile was taken into custody with the assistance of other officers.

The juvenile suspect, who is not named because of his age, is also being investigated for possessing a dangerous illegal weapon, prohibited large-capacity magazine, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.

The case will be presented to the Denver District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.
