A former Loveland police officer who hit a handcuffed woman after she spit in his face is charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
Larimer County Sheriff’s Office investigators presented the criminal case against Russell Maranto to the Larimer County District Attorney’s Office, and a court summons was issued on Thursday, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The sheriff’s office criminal investigation was conducted independently of a Loveland Police Department internal review of the May 20 incident which happened at UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies where the woman was being evaluated. The police department fired Maranto on May 23.
