Rockies’ Yonathan Daza injures shoulder, leaves game

Rockies center fielder Yonathan Daza is hopeful that his shoulder injury will not keep him out for very long.

“Hopefully it’s not too bad,” Daza said after the Rockies’ 8-6 victory over the Cardinals on Thursday at Coors Field. “It happened to me before at Double-A but this time it feels better. I don’t know yet if I’ll have to go (on the injured list).”

Daza dislocated his left shoulder during the first inning while making an excellent running catch on a line drive by the Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado. Daza tumbled to the ground after making the grab and was clearly in pain. He popped his shoulder back into place by himself while he was still on the field.

Asked how painful that experience was, Daza smiled and quipped: “No comment.”

A team trainer helped Daza leave the field through the gate to the Rockies’ bullpen in right-center field. Daza was replaced by Garrett Hampson.

Daza getting hurt was the second significant injury for Colorado in the last two days.

Catcher Elias Diaz left Wednesday night’s game prior to the ninth inning because of an injury to his left hand. He underwent an MRI and was unavailable to play Thursday.

“He’s sore but nothing’s broken,” manager Bud Black said after Thursday’s game. “Probably, more than likely, he’s headed toward the injured list. He has a sprained ligament in the top of his hand. It will be 10 days — if we put him on the IL.”

Triple-A catcher Dom Nuñez flew to Denver from Albuquerque on Thursday and will serve as the backup catcher to Brian Serven.

Bryant update. Left fielder Kris Bryant, his left foot still in a walking boot as he deals with plantar fasciitis, said Thursday that he’s “frustrated” by his latest injury, which came at a time when he was starting to heat up at the plate.

“I hit a stretch where I was really seeing the ball well, where every time I went up to the plate I thought I was going to have a really good at-bat,” Bryant said of 22 games in July when he slashed .341/.411/.612.

He’s been on the injured list three times this season (twice for lower-back soreness) and also missed time during the birth of his twins. So he’s played in only 42 of Colorado’s 114 games.

Bryant remains hopeful of playing again this season and has been receiving treatment that includes “tons of icing” as well as shockwave and ultrasound therapy.

On Deck
Diamondbacks RHP Zach Davies (2-4, 4.03 ERA) at Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela (3-6, 4.68)
6:40 p.m. Friday, Coors Field
TV: ATTRM
Radio: 850 AM/94.1 FM

Senzatela will make his second consecutive start against Arizona. He didn’t get the decision in the Rockies’ 3-2 win at Arizona last Saturday, but he pitched well, delivering a season-high seven innings. He allowed two runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts. He also faced the D-backs on July 1 at Coors, departing the game after two innings because of a sore shoulder. The right-hander is 3-8 (Rockies 6-10) with a 6.00 ERA in 16 career starts against Arizona. In seven starts against the D-backs at Coors Field, Senzatela is 1-3 (Rockies 3-4) with a 5.92 ERA.

Davies has pitched well against the Rockies, going 4-3 with a 3.61 ERA in 11 career starts. On Aug. 7 at Chase Field, he held the Rockies scoreless for five innings but did not get a decision in Arizona’s 6-4 win. Davies allowed just four hits and walked two while fanning three. It was a strong performance considering that he was pitching just his second game after returning from a shoulder injury. Over two games (11 1/3 innings) against Colorado this season, he has not allowed a run.

Trending: Third baseman Ryan McMahon hit a seventh-inning home run Thursday to extend his hitting streak to a season-best nine games, during which he’s hit .353 (12-for-34).

At issue: Outfielder Connor Joe, who was the  Rockies’ leadoff hitter for much of the season, is getting very little playing time of late. He’s 3-for-33 (.091) in his nine games since the All-Star break and is hitting .143 (13-for-91) over his last 26 games.
