Looks like the Rockies will abstain again from trying to improve their farm system by doing nothing at the upcoming trade deadline. Why bother when you can bring back the same old trash for next year and have another 75-win season? The Rockies’ general manager has no clue how to build a ball club. He is just a cheap replacement for the previous worthless GM. Also, what a waste of money on Ryan McMahon. Hitting .234 with eight home runs is worth six years and $70 million?
Ben, miffed
Kiz: In addition to being a righteously groovy dude, Daniel Bard has been the best player on a bad team, posting 21 saves on a sterling 1.91 earned run average. But when you sign a 37-year-old reliever to a two-year contract extension only days before the trade deadline, are the Rockies fooling anybody except themselves? This ballclub isn’t cheap with its money. That’s not the main problem, which is the stupid allocation of funds, as seen in the ridiculously hefty contracts for Kris Bryant and McMahon.
The Rockies know there is not a chance to make the playoffs and there is no wait until next year. Same old story. Losers! As long as fans buy tickets and overpriced concessions to eat and drink at Coors Field, they are partially responsible for this sorry team, year after year.
James, taking names
Kiz: Attempting to explain why the Rockies are inclined to stand pat at the trade deadline, manager Bud Black said he doesn’t want to swap his Range Rover for your Subaru. I hate to be the one to tell Black, but he’s driving a 1986 Dodge Caravan with cheesy wood paneling on the doors.
Kiz, thank goodness for your voice of reason in regards to the sinking ship that is college football. We have watched as Colorado State and CU have wallowed in futility, trying to emulate big-money college sports. It has been a debacle. We have lost cherished rivalries, regional identification and embraced irrelevancy. Making money through college athletics is fine, but it is now a destructive runaway freight train.
Mark, sick and tiredÂ
Kiz: “When I look at what is taking place in college sports,” Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff says, “I believe we have lost sight collectively of the student-athlete.” And when college football becomes pro football, it will have sold is soul.
For once, Kiz, I agree with you on being in no hurry to begin contract negotiations with Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson. Still lurking in my mind is the question of why Seattle traded him.
Joe, healthy skeptic
Kiz: Seattle lost its appetite for Russ’ cooking, not to mention all the chefs in Wilson’s kitchen.
And today’s parting shot is inspired by the offer of President Joe Biden’s administration to swap a notorious arms dealer for the release of basketball star Brittney Griner from a Russian jail.
It’s perpetual virtue signaling from you, Kiz. Your job description is sports writer. We could do a trade with the Denver Post editorial page. Maybe a used COVID mask and a future draft choice for you?
S.O., sticking to sports
