Major League Baseball’s new pitch clock is going to take some getting used to. You can ask Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland about that.

Making his first Cactus League start on Sunday against Milwaukee, Freeland struggled a bit with the new rule, which gives pitchers 15 seconds to deliver a pitch with nobody on base and 20 seconds if there is a baserunner. Freeland gave up three runs on six hits over three innings.

The lefty is using PitchCom (the electronic signal device) for the first time this spring and he told MLB.com that he’s still getting used to it.

Position battles: No. 1 prospect Zac Veen, penciled in to begin the regular season at Double-A Hartford, is making a lot of noise early in camp. The outfielder doubled, reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole two bases Sunday. He’s 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a homer through his first two Cactus League games.

And prospect Brenton Doyle, who’s trying to push his way onto the 26-man roster, was 1-for-2 with one walk and one strikeout Sunday. He’s 2-for-3 with two RBIs, three walks and a stolen base this spring.

Prospect watch: Catcher Drew Romo, just 21, entered Sunday’s game in the sixth and promptly singled in his first at-bat and then stole second. The Rockies’ catcher of the future, then hit a bases-loaded triple in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie and hit a bases-loaded single in the eighth.

On the mound: Closer Daniel Bard pitched a perfect fourth inning, inducing three groundouts. Justin Lawrence, Phillips Valdez and Gavin Hollowell all pitched a scoreless inning.

At the plate: No. 2 catcher Brian Serven hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his first of spring.
