Rockies spring training recap: Brendan Rodgers stays hot but offense gets just three hits

Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 1
Wednesday at Salt River Fields

On the mound: Right-hander Peter Lambert, making his third start and sixth Cactus League appearance, was sharp early but allowed three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five. Lambert, competing for a job at the back of the rotation, has a 5.40 spring ERA. … It was a tough two-thirds of an inning for lefty reliever Evan Justice, who walked three and hit a batter.

At the plate: Colorado got just three hits, but second baseman Brendan Rodgers stayed hot. He went 1-for-3 with a double and has a hit in eight consecutive games during which he’s hit .435 (10 for 23).  … Catcher Elias Díaz (1 for 2) and third baseman Ryan McMahon (1 for 3, one RBI) had the other two hits.

Prospect watch: The club reassigned right-handed relievers Geoff Hartlieb and Jaden Hill and catcher Drew Romo to minor league camp. None of the three are on the 40-man roster. Despite his struggles in a recent outing, the Rockies are intrigued by Hill’s near-100 mph fastball, solid changeup and a developing slider. Manager Bud Black said he was impressed by Romo’s development behind the plate during camp. The Rockies have 39 players in camp, not including right-hander Antonio Senzatela, who is on the 60-day injured list as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery.

Up next: Cubs at Rockies, 1:10 p.m. Thursday

Rockies probable pitchers: RHP Ryan Feltner, RHP Victor Vodnik, LHP Jalen Beeks, RHP Nick Mears, LPH Ty Blach.
