When Alan Trejo hit a solo homer in the fifth inning Wednesday night, it looked like the Rockies just might change the narrative of their sad road story.
At least for one night.
Nothing doing.
San Francisco won, 6-3, at Oracle Park, extending its winning streak over Colorado to seven games, matching the Giants’ longest single-season winning streak over their National League West foe.
Trejo belted Sean Hjelle’s 2-1 sinker over the wall in extreme right field to cut San Francisco’s lead to 3-2. It was the fourth homer of the season for the infielder, who’s making a strong bid to be on the major-league roster next season. He also hit a double to right in the eighth.
But all of Trejo’s good came undone when the Giants scored three runs off of relievers Justin Lawrence and Chad Smith in the sixth. Lawrence was charged with all three runs, though it was Smith who gave up a two-run triple to Joc Pederson.
For Rockies right-hander Jose Urena, every start is an audition for next season, be it for the Rockies or another team. He made a decent impression against the Giants, pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. The pending free agent struck out six, but he also walked four, something sure to put a frown on the face of manager Bud Black.
The Giants did all of their damage against Urena in their three-run first inning, one aided by a throwing error by center fielder Yonathan Daza. Pederson and J.D. Davis opened with back-to-back singles and they scored on Mike Yastrzemski’s RBI single. Yastrzemski scored on Brandon Crawford’s sacrifice fly.
The Rockies battled back to score a run in the second, using a walk by C.J. Cron, a single by Sean Bouchard and sloppy errors by third baseman David Villar and pitcher Sean Hjelle.
The Rockies, who have been outscored 365-221 away from Coors Field this season, managed just four hits against six Giants pitchers.
Colorado — 9-28 against the Giants since 2021, including a 4-14 record at Oracle Park — will try to avoid a three-game sweep on Thursday night.
Blackmon’s season ends. Veteran outfielder/designated hitter Charlie Blackmon, 36, went on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his left knee before Wednesday’s game. With just seven games remaining in the season, Blackmon’s season is over.
Blackmon is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on Monday in Denver. The procedure will be performed by team physician Dr. Thomas Noonan.
“I don’t want to not play,” Blackmon told reporters in San Francisco. “I’ll have surgery before the end of the season, which is good. I’ll get up on the way to recovering. But then I won’t be there with the team. … It just kind of stinks, this being the end of the season. You just don’t want to have to miss time.”
Blackmon’s said his knee has been bothering him for about a week.
