Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron exited Sunday’s game against Philadelphia in the third inning after popping up to second base and is likely headed to the 15-day injured list.
Cron grimaced as he swung and then hobbled a few feet out of the box before going down to one knee. He was tended to by trainers for a moment before immediately exiting the game.
The club said Cron’s exit was due to back spasms. After the game, Rockies manager Bud Black said Cron’s back injury is similar to the one he suffered in 2021, when he missed 11 games.
“It’s the same type of back issue that got him in St. Louis in 2021,” Black said. “It’s the same type of injury — spasm, lock-up. It’s going to take three or four days to (unlock), probably more, and we’ll be cautionary and put him on (the injured list) to make sure when he comes back, if it is 10 days, on the 11th day, he’ll be ready to go.”
Cron was replaced at first base by Mike Moustakas, with the Rockies leading 2-0 at Coors Field. Colorado went on to a 4-0 victory.
Coming into the game, Cron was hitting .231 with six homers. A first-time all-star last year, Cron belted 29 homers and 102 RBIs.
