Rockies’ Austin Gomber improves in second spring start

Cubs 6, Rockies 5
Sunday at Salt River Fields

On the mound: Left-hander Austin Gomber rebounded from a poor first start and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts across three innings Sunday.

Right-hander Connor Seabold, who figures as a depth option in the rotation, continues to pitch well. He allowed two hits and struck out five through three innings of relief. Seabold is unscored upon through five innings.

At the plate: Kris Bryant is showing off his power in Arizona. The outfielder — he could be seeing time in right field — hit his third homer of spring. He went 1-for-2 with one walk.

Ryan McMahon, who’s made the switch from third base to second in the wake of Brendan Rodgers’ shoulder injury, hit his first homer of spring. McMahon is slashing .357/.400/.643 in five games. And catcher Elias Diaz continues swinging a hot bat, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Diaz is hitting 7-for-13 with five RBIs.

Injury updates: Free-agent reliever Pierce Johnson, the likely set-up man for closer Daniel Bard, left Sunday’s game after facing six batters when he experienced right knee soreness in the fifth inning.
