Detroit-style pizza joint closes temporarily, blames city construction project

Less than a year after opening in Jefferson Park, Red Tops Rendezvous is hitting pause.

The Detroit-style pizza joint from Culinary Creative — the restaurant group behind Mr. Oso, Highland Tap & Burger, A5 Steakhouse, Ash’kara and others — temporarily closed its doors this week, “due to ongoing city construction that has rendered the surrounding streets untenable for business,” according to a press release.

Red Tops Rendezvous, 2917 W. 25th Ave., opened in July 2023 as a passion project from Culinary Creative co-founder Kevin Eddy, who grew up in Detroit. He longed for the rectangular pizza with a thick, crispy crust, and covered in marinara, also known as “redtops” in Detroit. This is the first restaurant that Culinary Creative has built from the ground up.

“The construction, which began last fall and is expected to continue through the summer, has progressively escalated each month with an undetermined end,” the press release continued. “Despite our efforts to sustain operations amidst the disruptions, the extensive construction has significantly impacted customer access and as a result revenue.”

The pizza joint will remain closed until further notice, but the restaurant group is optimistic about reopening in the future.

“It’s an unfortunate situation that has been a learning experience for our organization and I truly hope the city takes a long look at this and has a learning moment as well,” Culinary Creative CEO Juan Padro said in a statement. “We will endure, however, most small businesses would have lost everything. The revenue losses have been staggering and we held on as long as we could.

“I do believe we need to work towards a better plan as this seems to be happening all over the city,” he added.
