A man killed by El Paso County law enforcement early Saturday morning in Security-Widefield refused to drop his gun and pointed it at police before officers shot him, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

El Paso County sheriff’s deputies and Fountain police responded to call from a deputy about a man carrying a gun and walking south on Security Boulevard near Crawford Avenue at 12:38 a.m. Saturday.

Officers from both agencies made contact with the man and asked him to drop the gun. He did not comply, and at one point pointed the gun at police, according to a Monday news release from Colorado Springs police.

Six deputies and officers discharged at least one round during the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office. The man was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries.

The man will be identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

The six deputies and officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave in accordance to department policies, the sheriff’s office announced in a news release Friday.

They are Deputy Tiffany Lee, Cpl. Eric Moore, Deputy Cameron Komrofske, Deputy Johnathan Aggen, Officer Brandon Anderson and Officer Destin Alvarez, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of the shooting at 1:40 a.m. and detectives responded to take over the investigation, the department said in its news release.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office held a news briefing at 4:30 a.m. Saturday about the shooting, and no further information was released until Monday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Caitlin Ford said the information released Monday was the same as announced at the Saturday morning briefing and attributed the delay to it being a weekend.
