Douglas County deputies shot a man in Castle Rock early Wednesday after a pursuit that began in Thornton over a possible stolen vehicle.
The shooting happened after the suspect vehicle crashed into a gas station near Plum Creek Parkway and Perry Street, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a news conference.
Thornton police officers about 5 a.m. were attempting to contact the driver of a possibly stolen vehicle near Interstate 76 and E. 58th Ave. when the driver of the vehicle fled toward Interstate 25 and a pursuit ensued.
At some point, the occupants of the car shot at the officers at least twice, according to a news release.
The pursuit then continued on Interstate 25 into Douglas County.
Douglas County sheriff deputies picked up the pursuit near County Line Road and continued into Castle Rock. While in Castle Rock on I-25, the vehicle sideswiped two uninvolved vehicles.
The driver then exited the interstate at Wolfensberger Road, and the pursuit then continued in Castle Rock onto S. Plum Creek Parkway.
Weekly said the driver twice swerved toward deputies in an attempt to hit them.
Law enforcement deployed stop sticks on the vehicle, and the vehicle later veered into the gas station parking lot and crashed into the store.
Weekly said in the news conference they did not know if the driver did that on purpose or lost control of the vehicle, but a news release posted on X later said the driver intentionally drove into the gas station.
A customer and employee were inside the store when the car crashed into the building. Neither were injured, Weekly said.
Law enforcement arrived at the scene, one of the occupants of the car “brandished a handgun” at the deputies and deputies shot at him, hitting him multiple times.
A female occupant of the vehicle was interviewed and is now in custody.
The man was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, Weekly said. He was later identified in the news release as Kyle Williamson, 32.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team is investigating the shooting.
