17-year-old boy killed in shooting at Colorado Springs park

A 17-year-old boy died following a shooting at High Meadows Park in northeast Colorado Springs on Wednesday.

Police responded to the neighborhood park at 4216 Ashby Field Drive after receiving a shots fired call at 4:56 p.m.

While responding to that call, police received a second call about two juveniles with gunshot wounds at a business near North Carefree Avenue and North Powers Boulevard, one of whom had life-threatening injuries.

Police determined the boys were connected with the park shooting and both boys were taken to a hospital, where one later died from his injuries. The Colorado Springs Police Department identified him as a 17-year-old from Colorado Springs in a news release Monday.

The department did not provide any further identifying information about the boy who died, citing a 2023 state law that prohibits the release of the name and identifying information of a child victim or witness.

The second boy injured in the shooting was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released from the hospital, according to the Monday news release.

While the 17-year-old’s cause and manner of death will be released by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, the shooting is being investigated as a homicide, according to the department.

There have been no arrests in the case, but the shooting “is not believed to be a random act of violence,” police said Monday.

Anyone with information can call Colorado Springs police at 719-444-7000 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 719-634-7867.

The 5-acre park is adjacent to Springs Ranch Elementary School.
