Off-duty Denver police officer hits, kills man walking on road

An off-duty Denver police officer driving an unmarked police vehicle hit and killed a 70-year-old man on Feb. 21 who was walking across University Boulevard just outside of Denver.

The officer was driving north on University Boulevard, also signed as Colo. 177, near Hampden Avenue about 11:15 p.m. on Feb. 21 when he hit the man, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gary Cutler said. The man died at the scene.

The man was not walking inside a crosswalk and was about 30 feet north of the intersection, Cutler said, so investigators right now believe the officer was not at fault in the crash.

Investigators do not suspect either the officer or the man to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Cutler said the CSP investigation is still active, but preliminary information suggests no charges will be referred to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.
