One of two juveniles shot dead in Northglenn was armed with a semi-automatic handgun when there was an exchange of gunfire with a resident.
The shooting happened at about 2 p.m. on Sunday in the 11600 block of Pearl Street, police said.
The juveniles, who have not been named, broke a fence to enter a backyard and garage-like structure attached to a residence, police said in a Wednesday news release. One juvenile was armed with a handgun and the other a machete when there was an exchange of gunfire with the resident. The juveniles were both taken to a local hospital where they died. The resident was not injured.
Items from a nearby burglary, including an airsoft gun, were recovered from the Pearl Street backyard. “The airsoft gun was not a factor in the shooting,” police said. Both the handgun and machete were recovered from the scene.
An investigation is ongoing and police will present findings to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine criminal charges, if any, according to the release.
