Broncos move up five spots to No. 63 overall, draft Oklahoma WR Marvin Mims Jr.

Denver made a splash on Friday night, trading up five spots to draft Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. with the final pick of the second round in the NFL draft.

Mims, 5-foot-11 and 183 pounds, ran a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

At Oklahoma, Mims played for a pair of prolific offensive coordinators in Lincoln Riley and then Jeff Lebby. He told reporters in Denver that he split his time “about 50/50” between playing in the slot and lining up outside.

Regardless of where he lined up, Mims was a big play waiting to happen at OU. Over the past two seasons, he caught 86 passes for 1,788 yards, an average of 20.8 yards per reception.

The Broncos moved up five spots to No. 63 overall and also got the No. 183 overall pick from Detroit and sent back No. 68 and No. 139. Denver entered Friday with just five picks overall in the draft: Nos. 67 and 68 in the third round, No. 108 in the fourth round, No. 139 in the fifth round and No. 195 in the sixth round.

The Broncos made two picks on Day 2 of the draft after sitting out the first round on Thursday night. Here’s a little bit more about Denver’s newest additions.

WR Marvin Mims Jr.

Round/pick: 2nd, No. 63

College: Oklahoma

Age: 21

Height/weight: 5-11, 183

Hometown: Frisco, Texas

Notable: Mims started 24 of his career 37 games at Oklahoma over three collegiate seasons and wasted no time making an impact. He caught nine touchdowns as a freshman in 2020, hauling in 37 passes for 610 yards in the process. Then over his final two seasons, he started 23 of 26 games and averaged 20.8 yards per reception. After averaging 22 yards per catch as a sophomore, Mims caught a career-best 54 passes for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns in 2022 and was named first-team All-Big 12 by the conference’s coaches. Mims played two years with 2022 Denver draft picks Nik Bonitto and Delarrin Turner-Yell and said he’s very close with former OU and new Broncos running back Samaje Perine. He’ll push for time in Denver’s receiving rotation as a rookie, especially considering KJ Hamler is in the midst of recovering from a torn pectoral muscle sustained this spring.
