Second murder suspect arrested in death of Wheat Ridge antique store owner

A second suspect has been arrested on murder and robbery charges in the November shooting death of a Wheat Ridge antique and jewelry store owner.

Michael McCormack, 50, was arrested Wednesday by Wheat Ridge officers and charged with second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, aggravated robbery and motor vehicle theft by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, officials announced Thursday.

McCormack is the alleged accomplice of Charles Shay, who was arrested and charged with murdering Peter Arguello in January. Shay was already in custody after police said he burglarized the antique store the day after Christmas, nearly a month after the shooting.

Arguello was killed in a suspected robbery at his store — Peter Damian Fine Jewelry and Antiques — on Nov. 29, 2023.

Witnesses told responding officers during the investigation they saw two people leaving the store the day of the shooting and entering a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, according to Shay’s arrest affidavit.

Wheat Ridge police investigators issued an arrest warrant for McCormack on March 7 but were unable to locate him until this week, according to a statement from the police department Thursday.

Officers from the Black Hawk Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office helped take the man into custody Wednesday, police said.

This is a developing story.
