A cow moose attacked a woman and her dog after they surprised it on the South St. Vrain Trail north of Ward on Wednesday morning, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials.
The woman was walking her dog when she came upon the moose, which charged, headbutted and stomped on her several times. She was able to walk to a neighbor’s house and contact law enforcement, according to the agency. The woman was transported to a local hospital. Further information about her condition was not available.
The dog, which was leashed, sustained minor injuries.
CPW officers were unable to find the moose in the area but posted signs warning visitors of a potentially aggressive moose in the area.
In a statement, officials warned hikers to be aware of moose resting or eating near rivers.
“Moose can perceive dogs as a threat, and CPW encourages dog owners to keep them on-leash at all times to avoid confrontations,” agency officials said in a statement. “Cow moose can become particularly aggressive when their calf is nearby.”
