Colorado Bureau of Investigation officials have identified two Monte Vista police officers who shot and killed an 18-year-old after he ran at them while swinging two knives.
The police had received 911 calls on March 21 and went to a house in town where they encountered the young man, who jumped out of a window while holding two knives, and then ran at the officers, swinging the blades and “barely missing the officers”.
Monte Vista police Cpl. David Pino used a Taser to try to subdue the 18-year-old, and Sgt. Michael Martinez then fired his handgun, according to an update report from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
“While retreating backward from the attack, Cpl. Pino fell to the ground and then fired his handgun,” the report said.
The 18-year-old was declared dead at the scene. He hasn’t been identified by the coroner’s office.
Pino suffered minor injuries. Nobody else was hurt, the CBI report said.
Both officers remained on administrative leave this week. CBI officials said they’re still investigating and no other information was released.
