A Milliken police officer shot a man early Monday after the man allegedly made threatening statements and ran at the officer with a knife, according to the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team.
Police responded to a report of a suspicious person near Milliken Elementary School in Weld County at around 1:20 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the agency.
An officer spoke with the man, later identified as Colin Brixius, by phone before arriving at the school, and Brixius made “multiple threatening statements toward law enforcement,” Weld County officials said Monday.
When the Milliken officer tried to contact him at the school, Brixius ran at the officer with a large knife. The officer ordered him to stop and tried to shock Brixius with a Taser before shooting him with a gun, according to the news release.
Brixius was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds and is expected to survive, the agency said Monday.
Brixius is under police supervision while he receives medical care and will be taken to the Weld County Jail on an arrest warrant for first-degree assault and menacing, both felonies, when he’s released.
The shooting is being investigated by the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team.
