Mexican restaurant to fill cheese-sized hole left by Truffle Table

After 10 years of cheesy goodness, The Truffle Table has closed its doors.

The fromage-focused bar, known for its seasonal meat- and cheese-loaded charcuterie boards, baked brie, grilled cheese sandwiches and fondue, said goodbye last month.

Owners Rob and Karin Lawler opened The Truffle Table, at 2556 15th St., in 2013 as a sister outpost to the city’s longest-running cheese shop, Truffle Cheese Shop, which they opened in Cherry Creek in 2007 and later sold to an employee.

A new big cheese plans to fill their shoes, though. Chef Johnny Curiel — in partnership with his wife and industry veteran Kasie Curiel — is getting ready to open his first solo restaurant, dubbed Alma Fonda Fina, in the former Truffle Table space next month.

“Thank you for 10 years of welcoming us into your lives and community,” the Lawlers wrote on The Truffle Table’s website. “We are so grateful to consider you our friends and neighbors and so happy for Kasie and Johnny and their new adventure. We know you’ll love them just as much as we do!”

The Curiels are quite the power couple within the restaurant industry. Johnny has previously worked with local big names like chef Troy Guard, chef Dave Query of Big Red F Restaurant Group, and chef Richard Sandoval. And Kasie brings more than a decade of experience at institutions like the Hillstone Restaurant Group.

Johnny will be showcasing his experience with Mexican cuisine and Mexican restaurants, like Centro Mexican Kitchen in Boulder and My Neighbor Felix in Denver. Alma Fonda Fina will honor Curiel’s roots as a contemporary Mexican concept.
