A deputy who fatally shot a man in Mesa County has been identified amid an ongoing investigation by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
Deputy Andrew Baca, who has been with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office for five years, “discharged his duty firearm” during an April 28 incident, according to a sheriff’s news release. Baca, a patrol deputy, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the judicial district’s investigation.
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was shot as 47-year-old Rafael Lopez-Leon of Grand Junction. Lopez-Leon was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting happened about 4:35 p.m. when deputies responded to the area of 2837 North Avenue to contact a driver, Lopez-Leon, who allegedly eluded a law enforcement traffic stop earlier in the afternoon, according to investigators.
No deputies were injured. Investigators have not said whether Lopez-Leon was armed during the incident.
