Megabus, which offers city-to-city express bus service across the country, is partnering with Burlington Trailways to start offering trips between Denver and 22 cities.

The new service started Monday and is part of the company’s expanded options for 48 cities. Colin Emberson, a vice president with Megabus, said Friday that travelers will ride on a Burlington Trailways bus. The buses depart from Denver’s Union Station.

“Denver is not a city that we’ve operated to or from in the past,” Emberson said. “What we’ve done here is partnered with Burlington Trailways. They would actually do the operating.”

The partnership allows people to buy tickets on the Megabus website and tie into the company’s network.

“That should mean other possibilities beyond what Burlington Trailways is offering,” Emberson said.

Real-time tracking is available on the website, allowing customers to monitor departure and arrival times.

Burlington Trailways offers service across the Midwest with daily trips to more than 50 cities in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska.

The Megabus routes out of Denver run just to the east at this point. “We are exploring other opportunities in the Denver area to potentially go in other directions,” Emberson said.

A post on Reddit about the new Denver service by Megabus complained it would be cheaper and much less time to fly to Indianapolis than ride the bus. A one-way trip to Indianapolis would cost $239 and one way to Omaha would be $155, according to the website on Friday.

“Our biggest competitor is the car and where fuel prices are, we know we’re very competitive,” Emberson said.

The cities Megabus will serve from Denver are: Sterling; Kearney, North Platte, Grand Island, Lexington, Lincoln and Omaha in Nebraska; Burlington, Fairfield, Monroe, Mt Pleasant, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa and Des Moines in Iowa; Bloomington/Normal, Champaign, Danville, Monmouth, Galesburg and Peoria in Illinois; and Indianapolis.
