Letters: A disappointed uncle pens an open letter to his nephew, Rep. Matt Soper

Colorado state Rep. Matt Soper, those were some disappointing tweets

Matthew,

I felt the need to write to you directly and publicly to express how completely distasteful and offensive I find your tweets. Shame on you!

So you think that Colorado is being Californicated? Statistically speaking, Californians are less likely to be murdered by a military-style assault weapon than people living in Colorado. That’s a verifiable fact.

No one, absolutely no one, is trying to take all of your guns away!

No one in the general public can feel safe anywhere anymore because of the proliferation of firearms in the United States. Guns/firearms are the problem, not the solution.

Please tell me, what would be wrong with a ban on military-style (AR) assault weapons? Those weapons are made for only one reason — to kill other human beings.

Your tweet sounds like you are trying to incite a Civil War. Who are these tyrants you are referring to? Other lawmakers who were fairly elected by the majority of the people in their districts?

As a lawmaker, how on earth do you expect to advance good legislation without honest dialogue?

I love the Western Slope, but you make it sound like a foreign country to me. You owe everyone an apology!

I truly believed, at one time, that you were better than this. I am appalled and greatly saddened that you would stoop to such a low political stunt. Why do you think so many Republicans are leaving the party in Colorado and declaring unaffiliated as their political status?

As a legislator, I would think that you would truly be educated as to what is in these bills and carry on an honest conversation with your colleagues, constituents, and the general public.

I look forward to your reply,

— Uncle Chris (Christopher Soper, Pacific Grove, Calif.)

Editor’s note: Rep. Matt Soper has since apologized and deleted a tweet that said: “Come and take it! They’ll have to invade the West Slope and murder us if they intend on us being defenceless! (sic) We will NOT bow to tyrants and those who seek to disarms (sic) us need to be prepared for civil war!”

Trump should get his day in court

Re: “Trump calls for protests if arrested,” March 19 news story

Really? Former President Trump is railing about pending charges for paying hush money to two former lovers to hide his character flaws in the run-up to the 2016 election, and now he is asking his supporters to protest, protest, protest. No surprise there; he’s very good at firing up his supporters and it certainly will not hurt his campaign coffers.

However, an indictment by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office as a result of a grand jury investigation is merely an accusation and formal invitation to defend himself in court. The district attorney’s office is simply doing its job and has a responsibility to the public to pursue charges given the evidence provided by a grand jury.

My point is if you truly believe in America and the judicial systems that support us, then you want the former president to get his day in court. If for no other reason than to vindicate himself. Contrary to the belief of some, guilt or innocence is not decided in the court of public opinion or by cable news entertainment outlets. Let us have a little faith in the systems that keep America great and let justice play out in our courts, not in the media.

Targeting Trump

I think most people realize that the charges against Trump would not be pursued if it were anyone but Trump. Think about it.
