Broncos head coach Sean Payton is not concerned about top draft picks Marvin Mims Jr. and Drew Sanders after both were limited during mandatory minicamp and part of OTAs due to injury.
Payton did not disclose the type of injury Mims, a receiver, and Sanders, a linebacker, suffered, but he said they are sharp mentally.
“We got early glimpses of them, and they’re quickly healing up,” Payton said on the final day of minicamp Thursday.
Payton’s brief injury rundown including running back Samaje Perine, who left practice early Wednesday due to a bruised thumb. Perine was practicing Thursday with his right thumb wrapped up.
In regards to Javonte Williams, Payton remained hopeful that the starting running back will avoid the physically unable to perform list ahead of training camp. Williams, who suffered a torn ACL last season, moved well during OTAs and minicamp but did not participate in team scrimmages.
“He’s doing well,” Payton said. “When I arrived, (the) injury was in the early stages, but I’m very optimistic.”
Denver may add more
The Broncos added to their defensive front by signing veteran outside linebacker Frank Clark to a one-year deal earlier this week. But Denver might not be done.
Payton said the team had its last personnel meeting before training camp to discuss needs.
“We discussed where we are heavy relative to the current 90-man roster and where we might be light,” Payton said. “That doesn’t stop. The hay is never in the barn relative to things like that.”
Defensive lineman and offensive tackle are two areas the Broncos could use more depth.
The Broncos could add another running back if they think Williams might miss some time during the regular season. The team had been linked to former Minnesota running back Dalvin Cook, who was released by the Vikings late last week. But the Broncos still have depth at the position with Perine, Tony Jones Jr., Tyler Badie and undrafted rookie Jaleel McLaughlin on the roster.
