Decades after her body was found in a canal, this Weld County mother’s death is still unsolved

More than two decades after the body of a 40-year-old Weld County woman was found in an irrigation canal, investigators are still searching for information about what happened to Margarette Brown, an Ault mother of four who was found dead on June 4, 2003.

Brown called a friend, her grandfather and then 911 from her home around 9 p.m. on June 1, 2003. She told an emergency dispatcher there were two women in her house and she wanted them to leave, and the dispatcher noticed she sounded intoxicated, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

But when Weld County deputies arrived at the house, no one appeared to be home, despite the lights being turned on and the front door open.

Brown’s body was found three days later, on June 4, 2003, in an irrigation canal near County Roads 43 and 90.

Despite interviewing “many friends and family members” during the investigation, deputies have not developed any leads, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Instagram.

In a June 7, 2003 article in the Greeley Tribune, Brown’s mother, Darlene Reeder, described waking up with “a cold feeling inside” the morning she learned her daughter’s body was found.

“She was a very sweet person, she liked everybody. That was probably her downfall,” Reeder told the Tribune in 2003.

Brown was found with “a significant cut on her head” but no other injuries that would have killed her, the Tribune reported. She also had a substance use disorder.
