A man shot by deputies in Park County is in critical condition at a Denver hospital.
The police shooting unfolded about 7:50 p.m. Thursday when deputies tried to make a traffic stop on U.S. 285 in Bailey, according to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation news release.
The driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser failed to stop and fled at speeds in excess of 100 mph, the release said. A pursuit was called off because of the “erratic and dangerous driving of the suspect.”
Deputies later spotted the Toyota in a ditch, just off U.S. 285, near Grant. The driver and a passenger, a woman, were inside a nearby residence seeking assistance with the ditched vehicle, the release said.
Deputies contacted the residents of the home and entered to “search for the suspects.”
The woman was “immediately arrested” without incident. The man “was found hiding in the home, and was shot by Park County Deputies following some type of altercation,” the release said.
The 45-year-old man was taken to a Denver area hospital where he remains in critical condition. No deputies were injured. Two deputies are on paid administrative leave per office policy.
The CBI is investigating the police shooting along with the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
