Man shot dead by Adams County sheriff deputy at Lakeside Inn on Federal Boulevard

A police shooting early Friday in Denver at the Lakeside Inn on Federal Boulevard left a man suspected of having a handgun dead — apparently after he pointed the gun at his own head — and an investigation into what happened has been launched.

The shooting happened shortly after midnight at 6251 Federal Blvd., according to the Adams County Sheriff officials in a Twitter post.

“Preliminary info indicates shots were fired when the suspect was believed to be armed with a handgun as a deputy attempted to contact him,” a sheriff’s office update on Twitter said.

The deputy was uninjured, officials said.

The man died after he was shot.

Police closed the southbound lanes of Federal Boulevard for several hours early Friday. Two lanes were re-opened at 4:18 a.m. but one lane remained closed.  A 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was gathering information related to this incident, court officials confirmed.

The Lakeside Inn in sits the Berkley neighborhood in northwest Denver, northeast of Lake Sangraco and Jim Baker Reservoir.

“Gunshots woke everybody up…..  I hear four. Some people heard two,” David Martinez, a manager, said Friday morning.

An officer followed a vehicle with a man and woman in it into the parking lot, Martinez said.

“Guy got out, had a gun” and “was pointing it toward his own head,”  Martinez said. The woman got out, too, he said

The officer confronted the man. “He was telling him to drop it. ‘Drop it!’ But he wouldn’t drop it. He was pointing it at his own head.”

The officer “only shot him once,” Martinez said. “The cop decided to fire. He immediately jumped on him, giving him CPR.”
