A man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for the July 2023 fatal shooting of Miguel Antonio Chavez-Eagle, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
After a four-day jury trial, Omar Nieves, 29, was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday, according to court documents.
Nieves was arrested in July 2023 without bond in connection to the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Chavez-Eagle on July 14, 2023, according to a Monday news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Two women were physically fighting around 6 a.m. on the morning of July 14, at a home along East 118th Avenue in Commerce City, according to the release. Nieves and Chavez-Eagle were both present for the fight. Chavez-Eagle tried to break the two women up and Nieves shot him in the forehead, according to the district attorney. Chavez-Eagle died at the scene. Nieves fled the area and was arrested by the Commerce City Police Department on July 20, 2023, the release states.
