Jefferson County man dies in custody after collapsing in county jail

A 57-year-old Jefferson County man died in custody Sunday after collapsing in the county jail.

William Newell was booked last week on investigation of burglary, third-degree assault and theft, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a news release.

The inmate had a leg injury when he entered the jail, authorities said, but had no other known medical issues. He collapsed Saturday while on detox protocol.

The First Judicial District Law Enforcement Critical Incident Response Team launched an investigation into the death, as it does for all in-custody fatalities.
