Colorado Springs man missing on Longs Peak since Sunday

A 23-year-old Colorado Springs man is missing in Rocky Mountain National Park after he summited Longs Peak but didn’t return home Sunday.

Lucas Macaj was last heard from at 1 p.m. Sunday when he texted a friend that he was on the summit of Longs Peak, national park officials said in a news release Monday.

“Significant storms” moved through high elevations of the park Sunday afternoon, park officials said, and Macaj was reported overdue late Sunday night.

Air and ground teams on Monday searched along the Longs Peak Trail to the Ledges on the Keyhole Route as well as the Boulder Brook Trail and the saddle between Longs Peak and Mount Meeker, national park officials said.

Crews also searched the Trough, the Narrows and the Homestretch.

Macaj started from the Longs Peak Trailhead early Sunday and took the Keyhole Route to the summit, and park rangers confirmed early Monday his vehicle was still at the trailhead.

He is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 155 pounds with brown hair and green eyes, according to park officials.

He is likely wearing a dark top, tan or brown pants, khaki-colored boots and a black backpack, and he may be wearing a beanie and dark gloves.

Anyone who was in the area Sunday or may have seen Macaj can call or text the National Park Service Investigative Services Bureau Tip Line at 888-653-0009 or by visiting nps.gov/ISB.
