A 22-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the 2022 shooting of East Colfax community leader Ma Kaing was arrested Tuesday in a separate fatal shooting that Aurora police say occurred six weeks earlier.
Lu Reh was in custody at the Denver County Jail on Tuesday when an Adams County district judge signed a warrant to arrest him on charges stemming from the shooting death of 44-year-old Aurora resident Ricardo Ryans, Aurora police said in a news release Friday.
Police found Ryans dead from multiple gunshot wounds in an alley between the 1600 blocks of Willow and Xanthia streetsin Denver’s East Colfax neighborhood at 4:15 p.m. on May 30, 2022.
Two hours later, someone called 911 about a Volkswagen Tiguan parked near East 14th Avenue and Niagara Street, and officers found bullet holes and blood on the passenger seat of the SUV.
Witnesses told police the woman driving the vehicle went into a motel nearby. When found by police, the woman said she and Ryans were running an errand when an unknown man shot at the SUV while they were driving around a slow-moving sedan near East 16th Avenue and Alton Street in Aurora.
The woman sped from the scene and stopped in an alley to check on Ryans, who got out of the car and collapsed. She then drove to the motel where she was staying.
Police found bullet casings at the scene, and investigators worked for nearly two years to identify a suspect, Aurora police said in Friday’s news release. Reh was identified as a suspect through witness statements and ballistic and forensic evidence, police said.
Reh was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
He already is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and 14 counts of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting that killed Kaing on July 15, 2022.
Reh is set to appear in Adams County District Court on June 5, according to court records
