A man died after a Littleton police officer shot him when he allegedly pulled a gun on the officer.
The officer was attempting to contact the man, later identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office as 41-year-old Stephen Charles Poolson Jr., about the “suspicious vehicle” at about 1 a.m. Thursday near Powers Avenue and Bannock Street, according to a news release.
Police initially said Poolson was driving the motorcycle and crashed, and when the officer tried to contact him, Poolson “ran and produced a gun.” A week later, they acknowledged the officer struck Poolson with a patrol SUV and knocked him off the motorcycle.
The officer then fired at Poolson. It is not immediately clear if he tried to shoot at the officer.
Poolson was injured and taken to the hospital, where he died, police said about 5 a.m. The officer was not injured.
This is an ongoing investigation and there is no current threat to the public.
