Bemis Public Library in Littleton closes for methamphetamine remediation

Yet another metro-area library is closed as officials remediate methamphetamine contamination.

The Bemis Public Library in Littleton is closed after testing, performed out of an abundance of caution, found elevated levels of methamphetamine requiring “professional decontamination” in the main floor women’s and men’s bathroom exhaust fans and in a lower-level family restroom, according to a Littleton news release.

“The safety of our employees and library patrons is our first priority,” said Littleton City Manager Jim Becklenberg, in the release. “According to our partners at Arapahoe County Public Health, health risks to the public are considered low but we want to make sure our building is as safe as can be before we reopen it.”

The city is working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Arapahoe County Public Health, and a firm with expertise in testing and cleanup.

Methamphetamine contamination earlier this month forced the closure of the Englewood Public Library, the north Civic Center lobby and the second-floor restrooms of the city’s Civic Center.

RTD on Jan. 11 shut down bathrooms and a hallway at the downtown Boulder RTD station after testing found levels of methamphetamine exceeding Centers for Disease Control and Prevention limits.

The Boulder Public Library closed on Dec. 20 because of methamphetamine contamination. The library began gradually reopening after remediation efforts.
