Lawayne Mosley, the father of Elijah McClain, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of assaulting a Colorado State Patrol trooper, driving under the influence and other charges.
Mosley was contacted by the trooper after a driver reported a driver who was weaving and not maintaining speed on Interstate 70 just before 5:30 p.m., according to the agency.
The caller reported the driver had exited I-70 and pulled into a gas station in Adams County, which is where the trooper found Mosley.
Mosley did not follow the trooper’s instructions to exit the vehicle, according to the agency.
The trooper “began to assist” Mosley out of the vehicle and Mosley physically assaulted him, the state patrol said in a news release Monday.
An Adams County sheriff’s deputy who arrived at the scene used a Taser on Mosley, and medical personnel responded to the scene to treat the trooper and Mosley.
Mosley’s injuries were limited to the stun-gun contact points, according to the agency. The nature of the trooper’s injuries was not immediately available.
Mosley identified himself as McClain’s father during the arrest, according to the agency. McClain died after a violent arrest by Aurora police in 2019.
Mosley was taken to a local hospital for a voluntary blood test and booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault on a peace officer, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, careless driving and possession of a weapon while under the influence.
Mosley posted bail Sunday and is set to appear in court Thursday, according to court records.
